Organizing Graduate Workers in Physics Departments: a Workshop

July 14, 2026
Virtual (live)

As part of the APS Forum for Graduate Student Affairs Summer Webinar Series, we present Organizing Graduate Workers in Physics Departments: a Workshop. We will hear how organizing graduate students around labor rights has made a difference — and how you can enact similar positive change in your department!

Our first guest speaker is Mark Woodall, former Graduate Student Labor Organizer at the University of California, Merced. Mark will be sharing lessons learned from the high-profile UC Strike and provide insights on effective labor organizing specially aimed at people unfamiliar with labor unions in higher education. Then, we will hear from Brooks Howe and Scott Lambert, who will discuss how to get people to rally around common interests and what kinds of actions you can take to better your department.

This workshop will be hands-on, made for people who are new to labor organizing. We hope to see you there!
