The APS Division of Computational Physics (DCOMP) has established the Charlotte Froese Fischer Mid-Career Award in Computational Physics to recognize outstanding contributions by mid-career scientists whose work demonstrates exceptional impact and innovation across the broad field of computational physics.

The annual award includes a $5,000 stipend, a certificate, and travel support to attend the APS Global Physics Summit, where the recipient will deliver an invited lecture. As the only APS award dedicated exclusively to mid-career computational physicists, it fills a vital gap in recognizing and supporting this important stage of a scientist’s career.

This award honors Charlotte Froese Fischer (CFF), a pioneering physicist and computer scientist whose groundbreaking work helped define the field of computational physics. Dr. Fischer developed the multiconfigurational Hartree-Fock (MCHF) approach, integrated computing into university curricula, and advanced computer science education. As one of the few women in these fields during her era, she published more than 300 papers, authored influential textbooks, and inspired generations of researchers.

By naming this award after Dr. Fischer, DCOMP celebrates her enduring legacy as a visionary researcher, educator, and role model.

We are deeply grateful to DCOMP member and 2016 Aneesur Rahman Prize recipient Matthias Troyer for his generous commitment to match the first $80,000 raised in support of the award.
