American Physical Society expands membership plan options

The American Physical Society (APS), a membership organization of more than 50,000 scientists working to advance physics by fostering a vibrant, inclusive, and global community dedicated to science and society, has expanded its membership plan options.

The Society has rolled out new flexibility in membership plan options, as well as a program of accessible pricing for less-resourced countries.

Membership plan options with added flexibility

The two membership plan options will replace the current, single-membership model. This expansion is designed to provide increased flexibility for APS members.

Both membership plans, including the new Basic membership plan, include: access to APS News and Physics magazine, unit membership options, access to APS Fellowship, and the opportunity to vote in the APS general election. The Full membership plan’s expanded benefits include additional resources to keep members connected to the physics community: access to Physics Today, access to APS mentorship resources, and discounts on APS meetings.

“Physicists need access to different resources at each stage of their careers,” said Cortney Bougher, APS director of membership. “The new APS membership model will connect members with the APS offerings they choose to utilize in order to stay connected to the physics community. This change helps them get what they want out of their membership.”

Current APS members will remain part of the Full membership plan, offering expanded benefits, until their renewal date. At renewal, they’ll choose how they’d like to continue their membership.

Membership plan options with global pricing

APS also now offers discounted, accessible pricing on both membership plans for physicists and students in lower-income and lower-middle-income countries, as defined by the World Bank.

APS will offer membership discounted up to 90% for residents of eligible countries. Members must demonstrate residency in an eligible country during the membership join process.

“APS has a long-standing commitment to equitable access to science,” said Bougher. “These new membership discounts complement APS meeting registration price accessibility and participation in Research4Life journal initiatives.”
