Braslau Family Travel Grant
The Braslau Family Travel Grant provides support for US-based and international students and early career physicists to attend the APS Global Physics Summit. With assistance from this grant, students may overcome financial barriers to benefit from the professional and academic interactions of a scientific meeting.
Recipients will be awarded a meeting registration waiver and up to $1,750 in travel reimbursement to support their travel to the APS Global Physics Summit. The application is open Dec. 8 - Jan. 15. Please follow this walkthrough to navigate the application.
Funds will be distributed after the meeting upon receipt of required documents. Awardees will receive payment instructions upon notification of their selection.

Rules and eligibility
Applicants for this grant should be individuals who are:
- Degree-seeking students and early career physicists
- Presenting research at the upcoming APS Global Physics Summit
Underrepresented minorities and women are especially encouraged to apply.
Process and selection
Application materials include the following:
- Applicant information
- Presentation details
- Confirmation of prior conference presentations (if any)
- Applicant anticipated expenses
- Applicant’s description of their work (2,000 characters or fewer)
- Should address their contribution to the presented work, highlighting how the applicant is leading/providing a significant contribution to the research efforts
- Statement confirming why attending this conference comes at a timely point in applicant’s career (250 words or fewer)
- Confirmation of additional funding (if any)
- Advisor statement of support for students (500 words or fewer)
Applications will be evaluated by FDI Executive Committee members, as well as representatives from the Committee on the Status of Women in Physics (CSWP), and the Committee on Minorities in Physics (COM). The evaluation process will review the quality of personal statements, as well as advisor statements of support (for students).
First-time presenters will receive priority consideration, as will individuals without alternative funding. However, individuals with experience presenting and individuals with alternative funding are not excluded from consideration.
Establishment and support
Established in 2016 by David Braslau, this grant honors his brothers Norman and Robert Braslau — both accomplished scientists with distinguished careers in physics and systems engineering. Norman was a PhD physicist with a long and impactful career at IBM, making some significant scientific contributions. Robert was an aerospace engineer who worked on the Apollo program.
As of 2025, the Braslau Family Travel Grant is collaboratively administered by the Braslau Family, the APS Forum on Diversity and Inclusion (FDI), the Committee on the Status of Women in Physics (CSWP), and the Committee on Minorities in Physics (COM).
