Preparing Physics Students for a Wide Range of Careers

Degrees in physics have proved to be, and will continue to be, an excellent platform for success across a wide range of career options, including in the private sector, government, academia, and K-12 education. Physics departments are urged to update the design of their programs in light of the many career paths their graduates may wish to pursue. Students should have preparation in verbal and written communication, teamwork, ethics, teaching, and public service, as well as exposure to career paths and mentors from outside the academic setting.

Undergraduates should have opportunities beyond traditional physics coursework, including independent research in the undergraduate setting and technical courses outside of the major. Because the fraction of transfer students from two-year colleges has increased since 2008, departments at four-year colleges and universities are also urged to ensure that students who transfer into their programs have the full opportunity to pursue a physics major that includes training for a wide range of subsequent careers.
